The Oregon Coast Part 1

The Oregon Coast

Leaving Crater Lake we headed toward the Oregon coast knowing that we had to go over both the Cascade Mountains and the Coastal Mountain Range to get there.

Our 32' motorhome may be small by todays standards but when you add the length of the
Honda CRV that we tow and the tow bar, our overall all length is just under 53'.
After several hours of steep and winding roads only a few "Oh Sh**t moments,
we found ourselves in a wide valley between the two mountain ranges and the location of our stopping off point, the Melrose Vineyard which is another Harvest Host.

What a beautiful property

They had us park in their parking lot at the top of hill overlooking their vineyards

And they were so kind and friendly, it would have been rude not to taste their wine.. right??

The next morning we had breakfast with a view

We then continued on going over the Coastal Mountain Range with more steep and winding roads with more log trucks before arriving at the Three Rivers Indian Casino
in Florence Oregon for two nights.

The first night is free and then you have to accumulate 50 points gambling to get a free second night
So it ended up costing us 7 dollars a night to stay here

After the two nights at the casino we spent 4 nights at a Thousand Trails park for a total of 6 nights
in Florence Oregon, taking day trips up and down the coast

We did the touristy things like shopping and trying the local "Oregon Chowder" in Old Town and taking the 20 person dune buggy ride through miles of dunes and out onto the beach

To the north of town there is another touristy attraction, "The Sea Lion Caves" where you pay to go down in a cave along the ocean where the sea lions are know to gather.
While traveling on Hwy 101 a mile away from the cave we could smell the stench....
we decided that we would pass on this attraction.

We found this guy on the rocks, in the wild  not far from the caves

We also spent a lot of time in nature checking out the rocky tidal pools

Lots of sea urchins, big anemones and big sea stars

We hiked out and up to Hecta Head Light House which sits north of Florence

More fabulous views are the payoff for the hike up to the lighthouse

Loving our time here on the Oregon coast

Time to continue up the coast on Hwy 101
