Port Townsend to La Conner Wa
Port Townsend to La Conner
While traveling along the northern coast of Washington we have really enjoyed
They make wooden boats here and have summer camps for kids who want to learn
how to build wooden boats
And Friday night concerts in the waterfront park for everyone
After Port Townsend we took the ferry across the sound to Coupeville Washington
Since I was first in line I got a front row seat watching them unload the incoming ferry
Then it was our time to load up
They load the ferry according the height and weight so we ended up in the center of the ferry
and all the way at the front
Had to drive across Deception Pass bridge. Its only 28 feet wide and by the time you account for the walking lanes on each side of the road the traffic lanes are only 9 feet wide.
It made for an interesting drive with tractor trailers coming in the opposite direction.
Oh yeah, and it is 180 feet down to the water
Since we were staying only 20 miles away from the bridge in La Conner we were able to
come back several time and explore the area.
There is a beautiful state park here that was built back in the 1930s by President Roosevelt's CCC
With no power tools and very few trucks the Civilian Conservation Corp built many roads, bridges, national parks and building throughout the west
There is an excellent exhibit here that talks about the CCC with many journal entries from the
young men who were brought here from all over the country.
Having traveled as we have, we have been to many parks and natural areas that are the result of the CCC program. I hope to put together a post about the CCC at some point.
We hiked out to Lotti Point and the to Lighthouse Point and got a different view of the bridge
The pass is a busy place with tour boats and working boats coming and going.
We spent one afternoon hiking across the bridge as well as down under it.
We found this guy perched in a tree watching for a dinner opportunity
